When coming in to register with us, there are certain things you should do to make sure you’re prepared. There are also some things that you should try to avoid. Use these tips to help you prepare for your upcoming meeting with Signature Staffing!
These are just a few of the DO’s and DON’Ts for job seekers. While there are many more not listed here, these are just a few tips from all of us at Signature Staffing.
DO:
Professional Dress
This does not mean that you have to come dressed in a suit, but don’t come in your favorite jeans from four years ago with holes, tears and stains. For men, dress slacks and a button-down shirt would be preferable. If you don’t have slacks, dark wash jeans would be a reasonable substitute. Definitely opt for closed toed shoes, particularly dress shoes, to look your best.
Ladies, a dress, skirt and blouse, or dress slacks and blouse are most fitting for the interview. Say yes to panty hose and be careful in your choice of shoes. Remember, you are coming in for an application and interview, not going to a party with girlfriends. To both the ladies and the fellas, make sure your clothing has the right fit. If your pants are baggy and loose, wear a belt, and if that dress hugs you too tight, go with something a little more professional.
Bring a Resume
An updated resume is a must for all job positions, no matter what level. With the job market as competitive as it is these days, clients are looking for resumes for all positions, ranging from top executives to entry-level positions within their companies. Keep your resume simple and easy to follow – avoid colors and pictures. Be direct and to the point. Be sure to include your contact information. You should also include any specialized skills and certifications that you have acquired during your career. Don’t worry about fancy fonts or paper, but do try and keep your copies in a folder or somewhere they will not be damaged.
Be Confident
You may not think that confidence is key, but during an interview it can make or break you. From the moment you walk in the door you should speak clearly, in a firm but friendly voice. Introduce yourself and shake someone’s hand. Look them in the eye and explain why you have come. You can only make a first impression once! Watch your posture, especially during the interview. You don’t want to be slumped in the chair, looking at your cell phone in the lobby waiting on your interviewer, nor do you want to appear uninterested during your interview. Make steady eye contact with the Staffing Coordinator, sit up straight and speak clearly with conviction. Most importantly of all, be confident in your skills and abilities and be ready to sell yourself! After all, no one knows you better than you do!
DON’T:
Bring Your Children
Everybody knows daycare can be pricey, but bringing your children with you to fill out an application is very unprofessional. Not only do you disrupt the Staffing Coordinators trying to conduct business, but you also disrupt the other candidates trying to concentrate on their own applications.
To summarize, have someone watch your children if you plan to go fill out an application.
Use Your Cell Phone
Cell phones can be a great tool for locating phone numbers and addresses for the work history portion of your application, but please put it on silent and refrain from using it to answer calls while filling out an application. It is very inappropriate and disrupts those around you. Texting during your interview is another thing that will hurt your chances of getting a job. This may seem like a no-brainer to most of us, but yes, this does happen. All in all, applicants, please tuck your cell phone away and refrain from using it is an emergency.
Apply when Fatigued
“Early to bed and early to rise, makes us healthy, wealthy, and wise.” When coming in to apply for a job, you should be as prepared as you would be on the first day of an assignment, and this begins with a good night’s sleep.
